The Slamming South Yarra Market

When you walk into a venue and there’s a graffiti artist carefully emblazoning a blank wall near the entrance, you’re in for a tasty little treat.

This was my first impression of the newly opened South Yarra Market when I attended its launch on the 4th of June.

For most, the word ‘market’ conjures thoughts of harmonica-playing buskers, groceries and dangly, sparkly things from who-knows-where, that generally fall apart within a week of purchase.

The South Yarra Market shatters these stereotypes.

Located just off Chapel Street, down Oak Place, the market dwells in a warehouse big enough for plenty of stalls and grooving room while maintaining a cosy atmosphere.

Which (let’s face it) is perfect for a weekend jaunt after a few too many vinos the night before.

Emerging local designers showcase their wares amongst handmade jewellery, eclectic craft and international labels that are both unique and affordable.

Combine this with art, music and warm serves of mini Dutch pancakes, soup, Columbian coffee and fragrant mulled wine (yes, I said it was tasty!) and you have a weekend winner.

The guys behind the concept (Dave Brennan, Adrian Davis and Liam Magee) have undoubtedly put their backgrounds in fashion and events to good use.

What would make the South Yarra Market even better? More stalls of the same calibre, which I don’t doubt are to come.
