Boutique – a word that sends shivers down any girl’s spine. After all, it’s the destination where we gather our hero pieces and get ready for the season ahead.
The Boutique Designer Series show at Melbourne Spring Fashion Week certainly didn’t disappoint. And it goes without saying that the featured collections were all about one word – SUMMER SUMMER SUMMER.
Obus and Gorman ‘bought it’ in spades. Obus combined orange pop with floral swimwear, paisley, loose comfortable dresses and cute, functional backpacks. Gorman added a Spanish flair – high-waisted, high-cut briefs with 50’s head wraps and prominent pockets traipsed down the catwalk to “Coco Cabana” tunes.
Kings of Carnaby and Leonard St toned down the colours a touch, but not the quality.
The Face of MSFW, Sophie Van Der Akker, shone in a knit piece for Leonard St, alongside fringed, Indian-inspired red and olive pieces. Kings of Carnaby incorporated loose shift dresses and Peter Pan collars with white, yellow, black and cream. Sunglasses upped the “It” factor.
Alice Euphemia? As summer as an icy mojito. Metallics and lace, guilded prints, floral cigarette pants, fluoro digital, fringing and a leather enhanced blazer provided a breathtaking spectacle.
FAT, Green with Envy and Megan Park also used prints for added eye-candy. A blue/green/purple combo wash stood out for Green With Envy; as did an amazing black and white suit and dresses with trending “mullet” skirts. FAT’s tiger-print was sex on legs and Megan Park (famous for her intricate summer kaftans) used Indian digital prints by her in-house design team.
Nevenka, Dhini and LifewithBird were all about brights – Nevenka chose pink and purple to enhance fringing and paisley. Dhini ‘popped’ with orange and yellow/black cut-out pieces and LifewithBird, a crowd favourite, combined colour-wheel opposites orange and blue (and, with a hot ‘blast from the past’ – PLEATS!).
Wear your sunglasses while you shop this season, ladies. The future is looking bright indeed.
